Summary
Arrests at the Southwest border in the first four months of FY 2022 have already exceeded the yearly totals of the past 10 fiscal years. The statistics show another disturbing trend; the percentage of encountered migrants coming from beyond Mexico and the “Northern Triangle” of Central America has grown, reaching 41 percent of total apprehensions.
Concerned about this border crisis, Texas Congressman Lance Gooden has been focusing on organizations, both big and small – from the United Nations to NGOs to the TSA – that have been facilitating this mass migration with the aid of taxpayer funds. Rep. Gooden joins Parsing Immigration Policy to discuss the importance of enforcing the border, discouraging migrants from making the journey to the U.S. border, and the legislation he has authored to help make this happen.
Rep. Gooden also shares his views on what actions a House Republican majority might take on immigration.
In the closing commentary, podcast host Mark Krikorian provides analysis of the January border apprehension numbers – which are double last January but down December – and the possible impact of the Biden administration’s decision last year to start repatriating some illegal border-crossers from Central America by air.

Mark Krikorian is the Executive Director of the Center for Immigration Studies.
