Summary

This week Jeff Sessions, former senator from Alabama and U.S. Attorney General, joins Parsing Immigration Policy, where his voice is heard every week on the podcast’s intro montage saying, “Those Masters of the Universe are at it again.” Sessions shares his views on the Biden administration’s immigration policies, the present immigration crisis at the southern border, and actions Republicans need to take during the 118th Congress. Immigration was one of the key issues that defined his career as a public servant, and without his leadership, major amnesties and immigration increases may well have passed during both the Bush and Obama presidencies.

Sessions points out that policies make a difference and that the U.S. is capable of stopping the massive flow across the southern border. Conditions in the sending countries haven't changed since President Trump left office, but the number crossing the border has ballooned.

His message to those concerned over the immigration crisis, “Do not give up. This is not a lost cause. If we get the right polices and some legal changes in loophole closing, we can make this country proud of our legal system, not an embarrassment to this great nation.”

Is Sessions surprised by Biden’s policies? Can a Republican majority make a difference without having the executive and tee the issue up for the 2024 presidential election? Does the nation need a merit-based immigration system? Tune in to find out.

In his closing commentary, Mark Krikorian highlights two upcoming Center for Immigration Studies events. "The Cultural Impact of Immigration" will be held on Thursday, October 6 at 9:30 a.m. EST and will feature NYU Professor Lawrence Mead, author of "Burden of Freedom: Cultural Difference and American Power." He will be joined on the panel by Ramesh Ponnuru, editor of National Review, and Peter Skerry, a professor of political science at Boston College. The second panel discussion, "The Ukraine War and Its Impacts on Migration”, is sponsored jointly by the Center and the Hungarian Migration Research Institute and will take place on Thursday, October 13 at 9:30 a.m. EST. The discussion will look at conditions that might lead to new, perhaps larger, migration flows driven by disruptions caused by the Russian invasion.
