Why Does Microsoft Pay Its Canadian H-1Bs more than Its Chinese H-1Bs?

By John Miano on October 24, 2026

I previously a broke down Microsoft’s H-1B wages by country. Here is more detailed breakdown of Microsoft’s H-1B wages. In this case I have limited the records to those employed as software developers (Microsoft’s largest H-1B occupation) and to those working in the Seattle area (Microsoft’s largest H-1B location). The H-1B wages are compared to the median U.S. wage for a software developer in the Seattle Metropolitan Statistical Area to give a more direct wage comparison. Maybe Microsoft can explain why the median wage of their Canadian H-1B software developers is $16,000 more than the median wage of their Chinese H-1B software developers. Clearly age does not explain the difference.
