Immigration Brief: Visa Overstays

By Jessica M. Vaughan and Bryan Griffith on September 11, 2018

A report by the Center for Immigration Studies provides new analysis of the Department of Homeland Security's annual Entry/Exit Data Overstay Report, which identified over 700,000 overstayers in 2017, a decline of about five percent from 2016. The analysis shows that certain categories of visitors, particularly student and exchange visitors and guestworkers, have especially high overstay rates. Reducing opportunities for visitors to secure illegal employment may be the most effective deterrent to shrink the massive number of visa overstays.
