Summary

More than a million migrants and refugees arrived in Europe in 2015. Many European countries faced humanitarian, legal, and physical challenges from the historic number of migrants, including Hungary, which had the highest number in proportion to its population. At the time, scholars and policymakers had limited knowledge of the root causes and dynamics of irregular migration in Europe.

In response to the need for information, the Migration Research Institute (MRI), a think tank focusing on migration, was established in the fall of 2015 “with the undisguised purpose of researching and explaining immigration to Europe in a scientific and understandable way.” In this week’s episode of Parsing Immigration Policy, Viktor Marsai, research director of the Migration Research Institute (MRI) in Budapest, Hungary, discusses migration patterns in Europe, the challenges facing Europe, and future expectations.

During Marsai’s conversation with Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies and host of the podcast, it becomes apparent that Europe and the United States are facing many of the same challenges - smuggling networks, antiquated asylum policies, border security and the influence of non-profits, etc.
