"Mormon history may indeed sensitize the church to the "plight" of immigrants, but such sensitivity need not necessarily lead to a blurring of the distinction between legal and il-legal immigration. Indeed, the church clearly recognizes the distinction. As is stated as a basic church principle – a principle reiterated in 2010 in the church's expression of support for the Utah Compact, "We acknowledge that every nation has the right to enforce its laws and secure its borders. All persons subject to a nation's laws are accountable for their acts in relation to them."
