New from the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, Syracuse University
Sharp Decline in ICE Deportation Filings
Targeting of Serious Criminals Fails to Improve
February 2012
http://trac.syr.edu/immigration/reports/274/
Excerpt: The number of deportation proceedings initiated during October to December 2011 by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the nation's 50-plus Immigration Courts fell sharply to only 39,331 — down 33 percent from 58,639 filings recorded the previous quarter. Filings are typically lower at this time of year, but even adjusting for this seasonal drop-off and for late reporting, there appear to have been over 10,000 fewer deportation filings than would have been expected last quarter.
This substantial drop may have been caused by the steps needed to implement the June 17, 2011 agency directive on prosecutorial discretion or as the indirect effect of the review announced August 18, 2011 by the Administration of all pending Immigration Court cases. The objective of these twin initiatives was to better target enforcement resources on high priority cases.

Selling Ethnic Neighborhoods: The Rise of Neighborhoods as Places of Leisure and Consumption
Edited by Volkan Aytar and Jan Rath
Routledge, 178 pp.
Hardcover, ISBN: 0415899591, $111.72
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0415899591/centerforimmigra
Book Description:While ethnic neighborhoods are usually associated with poverty, crime and social problems, they have also emerged as places of leisure and consumption, providing opportunities for numerous entrepreneurs and employees. Local and national governments and other regulatory actors, as well as the media, have started to see and promote these neighborhoods as urban attractions for tourists, city dwellers and others. This book aims to analyze the roles of ethnic entrepreneurs and their associations and governments, and - by extension - of consumers and other actors in the rise of ethnic neighborhoods as places of leisure and consumption. Through case studies, it situates those neighborhoods at the edge of different theoretical debates about urban political economy and the politics of culture, and seeks a dynamic synergy between both.

Immigration Nation: Raids, Detentions, and Deportations in Post-9/11 America
By Tanya Maria Golash-Boza

Hardcover, ISBN: 1594518378, $78.88

Paperback, ISBN: 1594518386, $22.45
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1594518386/centerforimmigra
Book Description: Immigration Nation is a critical analysis of the human rights impact of US immigration policy. In the wake of September 11, 2001, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was created to prevent terrorist attacks. The creation of DHS led to dramatic increases in immigration law enforcement raids, detentions and deportations have increased six-fold in the past decade. Immigration Nation considers the widespread impact of this new enforcement regime. Immigration Nation explains how immigration policies in the U.S. have had negative consequences for citizens, families and communities. Even though family reunification is officially a core component of U.S. immigration policy, our policies often tear families apart. Despite the perception that immigration policy primarily affects immigrants, it frequently has devastating effects on citizens. The immigration policy debate is nearly always framed in terms of security and economic needs. In contra!
st, this book addresses the debate with the human rights of migrants and their families at the center of the analyses.

By placing these policies in the context of historical relationships between nations, the editors of this book have put forth a vital new portrait of the principles guiding migration in Europe.

Foggy Social Structures: Irregular Migration, European Labour Markets and the Welfare State
Edited by Michael Bommes and Giuseppe Sciortino
Amsterdam University Press, 229 pp.
Paperback, ISBN: 9089643419, $49.50
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/9089643419/centerforimmigra
Book Description: European countries are currently involved in several irregular migration systems, resulting in undocumented populations estimated to be in the millions. Without a certified identity, these immigrants live and work—and challenge previously existing notions of political statehood and society membership. An intelligent, poignant analysis of these systems’ effects on individual immigrant populations, as well as the nations in which they reside, Foggy Social Structures provides a historical and comparative account of irregular migration and its relationship to European labor markets.

Ethiopia Awaits Influx of Refugees from Sudan and South Sudan
By Joe DeCapua
Humanitarian agencies are preparing for an influx of refugees into Ethiopia from both Sudan and South Sudan. Civilians, mostly women and children, are fleeing fighting and violence in border areas.
Fighting continues in Sudan’s Blue Nile State between government forces and the rebel SPLA North Sector. While in South Sudan’s Jonglei State, ethnic violence stemming from cattle raids has left hundreds dead. The U.N. refugee agency or UNHCR is coordinating relief efforts with the International Organization for Migration and the Ethiopian Relief and Rehabilitation Commission
Remittances to Mexico are rebounding
Mexican immigrants living in the U.S. sent an estimated 8% more money back to relatives last year compared with 2010, thanks to an improving U.S. job market.
