Globalization, Migration and Social Transformation
By Bryan Fanning and Ronaldo Munck

Ashgate, 272 pp.

http://www.amazon.com/Globalization-Migration-Transformation-Studies-Di…

Hardcover, ISBN: 1409411273, $114.95
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1409411273/centerforimmigra

Book Description: In the space of around ten years Ireland went from being a traditional labour exporter to a leading European economy, and thus an attractive destination for immigrants from Eastern Europe and further afield. This produced a singular social laboratory, which this book explores in all its complexity set against the backdrop of globalisation. At once a showcase of the success of globalisation, Ireland became a destination for those displaced by globalisation's effects. "Globalization, Migration and Social Transformation" takes Ireland as a paradigmatic case of social transformation, exploring the reasons for which emigration was so quickly replaced by immigration, along with the social, political, cultural and economic effects of this change. Presenting the latest research thematically arranged around the themes of identity, social transformations and EU and Irish politics and policy, this book offers a rich array of detailed empirical case studies drawn from Ireland, which shed light
on the experiences of immigrant groups from around the world and the processes of social transformation. In addition, it examines the manner in which the Irish state and wider political forum relate to new migrants and vice-versa, thus advancing our comparative understanding of how the European Union is responding to the challenge of mass migration. "Globalization, Migration and Social Transformation" makes a strong contribution to the comparative literature on immigration and integration, diaspora and social transformation in the era of globalisation, and as such, it will appeal to social scientists with interests in migration, race and ethnicity, globalisation and Irish studies.

The Homeland Is the Arena: Religion, Transnationalism, and the Integration of Senegalese Immigrants in America
By Ousmane Kane

Oxford University Press, 336 pp.

Hardcover, ISBN: 0199732302, $99.00
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0199732302/centerforimmigra

Paperback, ISBN: 9780199732319, $30.61
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/9780199732319/centerforimmigra

Book Description: As Senegal prepares to celebrate fifty years of independence from French colonial rule, academic and policy circles are engaged in a vigorous debate about its experience in nation building. An important aspect of this debate is the impact of globalization on Senegal, particularly the massive labor migration that began directly after independence. From Tokyo to Melbourne, from Turin to Buenos Aires, from to Paris to New York, 300,000 Senegalese immigrants are simultaneously negotiating their integration into their host society and seriously impacting the development of their homeland.
This book addresses the modes of organization of transnational societies in the globalized context, and specifically the role of religion in the experience of migrant communities in Western societies. Abundant literature is available on immigrants from Latin America and Asia, but very little on Africans, especially those from French speaking countries in the United States. Ousmane Kane offers a case study of the growing Senegalese community in New York City. By pulling together numerous aspects (religious, ethnic, occupational, gender, generational, socio-economic, and political) of the experience of the Senegalese migrant community into an integrated analysis, linking discussion of both the homeland and host community, this book breaks new ground in the debate about postcolonial Senegal, Muslim globalization and diaspora studies in the United States. A leading scholar of African Islam, Ousmane Kane has also conducted extensive research in North America, Europe and Africa, which allows him to provide an
insightful historical ethnography of the Senegalese transnational experience.

Chinese Migrants and Internationalism
By Gregor Benton

Routledge, 180 pp.

Paperback, ISBN: 0415666457, $42.95, pp. 188
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0415666457/centerforimmigra

Book Description:The transnational and diasporic dimensions of early Chinese migrant politics opened in the late nineteenth century when Chinese radical groups bent on overthrowing the Qing dynasty (1644-1911) vied with one another to win Chinese overseas to their modernizing projects, and immigrants who had suffered discrimination welcomed their proposals. The radicals' concentration on Chinese communities abroad as outposts of Chinese politics and culture strengthened the stereotype of Chinese as clannish, unassimilable, xenophobic, and deeply introverted. This book argues that such a view has its roots less in historical truth than in political and ideological prejudice and obscures a rich vein of internationalist practice in Chinese migrant or diasporic history, which the study aims to restore to visibility. In some cases, internationalist alliances sprang from the spontaneous perception by Chinese and other non-Chinese migrants or local workers of shared problems and common solutions in everyday life and work. At other times, they emerged from under the umbrella of transnationalism, when Chinese nationalist and anti-imperialist activists overseas received support for their campaigns from local internationalists; or the alliances were the product of nurturing by Chinese or non-Chinese political organizers, including anarchists, communists, and members of internationalist cultural movements like Esperantism. Based on sources in a dozen languages, and telling hitherto largely unknown or forgotten stories of Chinese migrant experiences in Russia, Germany, Cuba, Spain and Australia, this study will appeal to students and scholars of Chinese history, labour studies and ethnic/migration studies alike.

Oceanic Migration: Paths, Sequence, Timing and Range of Prehistoric Migration in the Pacific and Indian Oceans
By Charles E.M. Pearce

Springer, 452 pp.

Hardcover, ISBN: 9789048138258, $138.65
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/9789048138258/centerforimmigra

Kindle, ASIN: B003TV3UC2, $124.78, pp. 438

Book Description: Oceanic Migration studies the prehistoric peopling of the Pacific. It uses science and mathematics to expand the research base of Pacific prehistory and casts new light on this final human expansion. It explores the fundamental roles of oceanography and of global climate change in determining the paths, sequence, timing and range of Spice Island-based maritime migrations ranging across a quarter of the globe. The book is of interest to Pacific prehistorians, oceanographers and American anthropologists concerned with the diffusionist debate. For oceanographers it presents the new idea of the role of the West Pacific Warm Pool and of three of its four major currents in determining the evolution of voyaging in two oceans. For diffusionists it provides new chronological and technological contexts in which the issue of diffusionism needs to be reconsidered. For prehistorians it creates a paradigmatic shift by establishing a new time depth and mechanism for Polynesian exploration, offers a new view of voyaging and exploration strategies and of economic imperatives and adds a new dimension to the debate on Polynesian origins.

Crossing and Controlling Borders: Immigration Policies and Their Impact on Migrants' Journeys
By Mechthild Baumann, Astrid Lorenz and Kerstin Rosenow

Paperback, ISBN: 3940755761, $47.95

Book Description: This volume highlights the impact of border controls on migrants' journeys in two major areas of immigration: the European Union and the United States. In order to show the linkages between border control policies and migratory practices, the book combines empirical insights from ethnography with approaches from political science. Describing migrants' realities reveals that the impact of border control policies goes beyond the actual border area affecting many lives and states.

Between Two Motherlands: Nationality and Emigration among the Greeks of Bulgaria, 1900-1949
By Theodora Dragostinova

Cornell University Press, 304 pp.

Hardcover, ISBN: 0801449456, $36.52
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/ /centerforimmigra

Book Description: In 1900, some 100,000 people living in Bulgaria-2 percent of the country's population-could be described as Greek, whether by nationality, language, or religion. The complex identities of the population-proud heirs of ancient Hellenic colonists, loyal citizens of their Bulgarian homeland, members of a wider Greek diasporic community, devout followers of the Orthodox Patriarchate in Istanbul, and reluctant supporters of the Greek government in Athens-became entangled in the growing national tensions between Bulgaria and Greece during the first half of the twentieth century. In Between Two Motherlands, Theodora Dragostinova explores the shifting allegiances of this Greek minority in Bulgaria. Diverse social groups contested the meaning of the nation, shaping and reshaping what it meant to be Greek and Bulgarian during the slow and painful transition from empire to nation-states in the Balkans. In these decades, the region was racked by a series of upheavals (the Balkan Wars,
World War I, interwar population exchanges, World War II, and Communist revolutions). The Bulgarian Greeks were caught between the competing agendas of two states increasingly bent on establishing national homogeneity. Based on extensive research in the archives of Bulgaria and Greece, as well as fieldwork in the two countries, Dragostinova shows that the Greek population did not blindly follow Greek nationalist leaders but was torn between identification with the land of their birth and loyalty to the Greek cause. Many emigrated to Greece in response to nationalist pressures; others sought to maintain their Greek identity and traditions within Bulgaria; some even switched sides when it suited their personal interests. National loyalties remained fluid despite state efforts to fix ethnic and political borders by such means as population movements, minority treaties, and stringent citizenship rules. The lessons of a case such as this continue to reverberate wherever and whenever states try to adjust national borders in regions long inhabited by mixed populations.

THE AMERICAS

Reform: House, States
President Obama, in his January 25, 2011 State of the Union speech, urged Congress to enact comprehensive immigration reform. He said: "I know that debate will be difficult. I know it will take time. But tonight, let's agree to make that effort."

DHS: Border, Interior, USCIS, RICO
The Pew Hispanic Center estimated there were a peak 12 million unauthorized foreigners in the US in 2007 and 11.2 million in 2010; 58 percent were Mexicans and 23 percent were from other Latin American countries. California (2.6 million) and Texas (1.6 million) included almost 40 percent of the unauthorized.

Labor, H-1B
The US unemployment rate averaged 9.6 in 2010, more than double the 4.6 percent rate in 2006 and 2007. Private-sector employers added jobs in 2010, offsetting those lost as government employment shrank, especially after workers hired to conduct the 2010 census were laid off. Nonfarm employment, mostly in temporary help, education and health care, rose by 1.1 million or 94,000 a month in 2010. Employment must rise about 125,000 a month to absorb new job seekers.

Population: Hispanics
The census released data on the number of US residents and their racial/ethnic characteristics from the 2010 census. Data on socio-economic characteristics of residents from the American Community Survey for 2005-09 was released in December 2010.

Census. The US had 309 million residents in April 2010, including 50 million Hispanics, 39 million Blacks, and 15 million Asians. The US population rose by 27 million between 2000 and 2010, up almost 10 percent from 281 million residents in 2000; over half of this increase, 15 million, was Hispanics.

Canada: Points, Mexico: Jobs, US
Canada plans to admit 240,000 to 265,000 immigrants in 2011; 60 percent will arrive via the points-based system that awards points for youth, education, and knowledge of English or French. This point system ensures that immigrant adults have higher levels of education than Canada-born adults. In 2005, about 55 percent of Canadian immigrants had university degrees, compared with 35 percent of legal immigrants admitted to the US.

Latin America
Remittances to Latin America and the Caribbean were $59 billion in 2010, about the same as 2008 but a sharp drop from $67 billion in 2006 and 2007. Remittances in 2011 appear to be rising. The average remittance from the US to Mexico in 2010 was $300.

IMMIGRATION

Immigration Reform: States, House
President Obama, in his January 25, 2011 State of the Union speech, urged Congress to enact comprehensive immigration reform. He said: "I know that debate will be difficult. I know it will take time. But tonight, let's agree to make that effort."

However, few observers expect comprehensive immigration reform to be enacted in 2011-12, largely because enforcement-minded House Republicans oppose legalization. Instead, House immigration committees are holding hearings on enforcement issues, including the Obama administration's substitution of I-9 audits for workplace raids, E-Verify, and state and local laws aimed at curbing unauthorized migration.

H-2A: Global; H-2B: Cases
H-2A. The US Department of Labor published Adverse Effect Wage Rates (AEWRs) for farm employers seeking permission to hire H-2A workers. These AEWRs, effective March 1, 2011, ranged from $8.97 per hour in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi to $12.01 per hour in Hawaii; in North Carolina, the state with the most H-2As, the AEWR is $9.30 for 2011. Employers who provide workers with three meals a day are allowed to deduct up to $10.73 a day from worker wages to cover meal costs.

DHS Enforcement
The Pew Hispanic Center estimated there were a peak 12 million unauthorized foreigners in the US in 2007 and 11.2 million in 2010; 58 percent were Mexicans and 23 percent were from other Latin American countries. California (2.6 million) and Texas (1.6 million) included almost 40 percent of the unauthorized.

There were an estimated 8.4 million unauthorized foreigners in 2000 and 3.5 million in 1990, that is, the number of unauthorized foreigners more than doubled during the 1990s and rose by a third between 2000 and 2010. In 2010, there were 15 million naturalized US citizens, 12 million legal immigrants, and two million temporary migrants, such as foreign students and guest workers.
